Gaming as a Medium for the Expression of Citizens' Views

GREAT project partners published a new scientific article last February 2025 titled Gaming as a Medium for the Expression of Citizens' Views on Environmental Dilemmas.

This article, that was published at IJIMAI journal (International Journal of Interactive Multimedia and Artificial Intelligence), is the result of a case study conducted to explore how games-based activities can be used to provide a link between citizens and policy makers.

The article tries to answer several questions, based on the project main objective: What game-based activities can be used to elicit, represent and communicate citizens' opinions on public issues, and to what extent is their use efficient and effective?

The gaming industry reaches 3 billion players worldwide, with annual revenues exceeding $200 billion, making it a cultural and economic giant. In this way, its capacity for technological innovation, and its highly participatory audience, make this sector a unique player in tackling global challenges, such as climate change.

GREAT is a research and innovation project (RIA), funded by the European Union within the Horizon Europe programme, which is coordinated by the Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education (DIPF) and in which, Spanish, British, Danish, German, Austrian and Cypriot institutions are participating.
