Unlocking Green Solutions: 'The Rooftop Revolution' Case Study

The Rooftop Revolution case study, part of the EU Horizon-funded GREAT project, explored how
serious games can bridge the gap between citizens and policymakers in the fight against
climate change. Led by Frederick University and sponsored by Urban Gorillas, the study ran from
October 2023 to December 2024 in Cyprus, engaging a diverse group of participants — from
policymakers and urban planners to students and property owners. At its core was a co-
designed serious game developed with Serious Games Interactive (partner in the GREAT
project), aimed at fostering dialogue about greening privately-owned rooftops.

Through a series of interactive game sessions, the study used role-play and real-world scenarios
to tackle key topics like green infrastructure benefits, incentive schemes, and barriers to
sustainable urban planning. Participants valued the opportunity to voice their views, learn from
others, and explore solutions collaboratively. The success of Rooftop Revolution sparked
interest from local municipalities and educators, reinforcing the potential of game-based
learning as a powerful tool for policy consultation. Looking ahead, the case study highlights the
need to scale these methods, adapt them for broader urban challenges, and further assess their
long-term impact on community-driven decision-making.
